Self-care, the way a person tends to their emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being, becomes foundational to maintaining health and wellness as a social worker, since it serves to mitigate the occupational hazards relevant within the social work profession. Therefore, it needs to be a top priority for both individuals and the profession at large. Self-care among social workers is a ‘precious commodity’, as well as an ethical imperative. According to Health Canada (2009), stress and stress-related symptoms account for 85% of all visits to doctors — stress is therefore a serious population health issue. Specifically, stress and mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, are frequently cited reasons for employee absenteeism, as well as both short and long-term disability claims within the health, human and social services sectors. The demands placed on human service workers in supporting people through challenging circumstances can contribute to high levels of stress and burnout.  Self-care practices implemented regularly may decrease the impact of the high levels of stress while also serving as strategies for coping during particularly stressful times.  Conscious YOU is based on the interconnections between contemplative practices, including mindfulness, as coping and preventative strategies for self-care practice among human service workers.

Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life, a way of taking charge of your life, a way of doing something for yourself that no one else can do for you — consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life.

Fortunately, mindfulness is not something that you have to “get” or acquire. It is already within you — a deep internal resource available and patiently waiting to be released and used in the service of learning, growing, and healing.

Evidence based research findings:

The past twenty-eight years has shown consistent, reliable, and reproducible demonstrations of major and clinically relevant reductions in medical and psychological symptoms across a wide range of medical diagnoses, including many different chronic pain conditions, other medical diagnoses and in medical patients with a secondary diagnosis of anxiety and/or panic attacks by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn of the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Additional research has been done by Dr Richard J Davidson, a research professor of psychology & psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin on the effects on the brain (as measured by MRI scans and so on) of meditation. Dr Davidson shows evidence for measurable effects of meditation both on the brains of experienced meditators (Budhhist Monks)  and novice meditators doing meditation training for only half an hour a day.

In another article entitled “The undoing effect of positve emotions”, Barbara Fredrickson et al. hypothesizes that “positive emotions undo the cardiovascular effects of negative emotions. When people experience stress, they show increased heart rate, higher blood sugar, immnue suppression, and other adaptions optimized for immediate action. If individuals do not regulate these changes, then once the stress is past, it can lead to illness, coronary heart disease, and heightened mortality. Both lab research and survey research indicate that positive emotions ( and relaxation techniques ) help people who were previously under stress relax back to their physiological baseline.”
